Geometric patterned tiles are the product of a long history dating back to the 10th century. Originally made to replicate mosaic tile patterns, they were first used in Northern Africa by the Romans. The geometric patterns follow shapes we are all familiar with, from squares, diamonds and circles, to stars, triangles and more. Despite being made using ancient cement methods, the mathematically-correct patterns all fit together to form larger, more intricate patterns if required.
Moroccan tiles, along with many other innovations such as the compass from China, were introduced into Europe when the Moors came over from North Africa via Gibraltar and into Spain and Portugal.
