Black and White

Despite the colour trend predictions for this year, black and white is still a good old favourite. It’s not that the colour trends aren’t abundant – see Designer Guild’s concentration on deep blue this year – but that black and white is easy to do. Or is it?

This spring’s emphasis on black and white is quite graphic and geometric. Elle Decoration predicted we’d see this interpretation from the catwalks of the Stella McCartney, Chanel and Proenza Schouler collections for spring.

Inspiration

The interior style magazines such as Livingetc and Elle Decoration are always a good guide on what’s current and also what other home owners favour. They’re a really good source of inspiration, whether you favour the actual glossy mag or the online versions. Other online sites are useful if you’re searching for ideas too – we’d recommend Houzz and of course Pinterest.

May’s edition of Livingetc features geometric Labyrinth wallpaper by Cole & Son to get you started, alongside many other accessories in these classic tones.

Rugs, chairs and even lampshades feature in the May edition of Livingetc alongside black and white tiles – Dolce Cube porcelain, Halo Halo glass mosaics and Terrades Grafito ceramic tiles.

A Monochrome bathroom

Black and white has long been a bathroom favourite, no doubt because there was once a limited choice of colours. In recent years the popularity of white ‘subway’ tiles has perhaps influenced its return to this room.

Accessories are easy for the black and white bathroom, with white towels accessible from almost everywhere, and high street stores stocking beautiful Egyptian cotton towels in black or black damask for contrast.

Online at RoomEnvy, black and white encaustic tiles are said to be ‘on trend’ and give a classic finish to a mixed style black and white bathroom.

The brilliance of black and white

Black and white or monochrome rooms can look clean and functional and classy but they also loan themselves neatly to splashes of colour.

You can create a really opulent looking bathroom if you include black fixtures such as a black glass sink and black walls, with touches of gold in the mirror frames or taps.

Make it funky with splashes of bright colours such as fuchsia pink or lime green. Nowadays many bathroom accessories are available in bright colours stretching far beyond towels and tiles. Radiators are one such ‘accessory’. Flat panel, designer glass wall radiators come in a variety of sizes and colours that could add just the splash you need.

However you prefer your black and white decoration, one thing’s for sure now is a good time to find a variety of pieces which will enhance this theme.
