Google Glass for colour inspiration

Interior design just got easier. Colour matching was always difficult. You knew just what colour you were looking for whether it was paint, towels or other accessories; but often what you bought didn’t match when you got it home.

Dulux paints

Then Dulux paints tackled the problem. Think back to those Dulux paint adverts more than ten years ago when you saw people stealing, cutting and snipping things that were just right to match with their perfect paint colour. Do you need a memory jog? Three scenarios used

  • School teacher snaps the head off a plasticine model to colour match
  • Woman finds green fluff on romantic partner and takes it to colour match
  • Woman in a chandlery finds toggle and snips it off for same purpose, only to see she has activated the inflation of a 24-man lifeboat

The adverts showed that any colour could be matched at one of Dulux paint’s in store colour mixers.

Moving forward

Some will say thank goodness for modern technology. Dulux has developed an App not surprisingly, that can help find just the colour you are looking for. No need to take physical evidence of your colour to the store. Taking a photo of something, the app can help you find the right colour in paint and offers you details of the nearest colour mix store and more.

Bang up to date

Now when Google Glass finally launches their product onto the market there will be a similar App available we’re sure. The apparent ease of their use – though they are still being tested by groups of consumers who paid almost £1,000 for the privilege – means that you can voice command Google Glass to film or take a photo for that same colour-matching process.

One of the other useful functions of Google Glass is being able to lay over dimensions of bathroom fixtures such as tubs or toilets so that you can see how they will fit in. All part of the ‘augmented reality’ function we’re told.

Google Glass will also be able to identify products you see in show homes or friend’s homes so that you know where you can purchase it too.

In the bathroom

Despite colour being a big part of interior design, since the coloured bathroom suites of the 1970s, we’ve steered well clear of colour in the bathroom bar the odd wall or an accessory or two. Far too many people remember the quickly dated looks of the avocado or chocolate coloured bathroom suites.

There is a little revival on the horizon though. Bathroom furniture and some baths and toilets, not to mention glass wall-hung radiators are making a nod to colour. This where your colour-matching apps could come in handy. If you’ve chosen one that has a burst of colour, then matching the tone or exact colour of your bathtub / furniture would be very useful. After all they are too big to lug to the paint or wallpaper shop!

For now though you will have to make do with your smartphone as the Google Glass isn’t likely to be launched late 2014 and as yet, the price is unconfirmed.
