{"id":2731,"date":"2014-06-06T11:37:41","date_gmt":"2014-06-06T11:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2731"},"modified":"2014-06-06T11:37:41","modified_gmt":"2014-06-06T11:37:41","slug":"reinvent-wheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/reinvent-wheel\/","title":{"rendered":"Reinventing the Wheel?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reinvention &#8211; some would say there\u2019s no need, while others would say it\u2019s how things develop by refining what already exists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The bathroom basin<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On this ancient Greek urn we see that a type of washing basin was already in existence in Ancient Greece as it shows a woman washing at a \u2018louterion\u2019 (water basin) and dates from 450 \u2013 425 BC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/bd\/Bell-krater_louterion_Louvre_CA1341.jpg\/600px-Bell-krater_louterion_Louvre_CA1341.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wikipedia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Move on many centuries to find the English bringing large bowls and jugs of water to the bedroom to use for the same ablutions. The basic principle is the same. A bowl shaped receptacle is a good shape to use for washing the body. This is only bettered by one big enough to sit in &#8211; otherwise now known as a bath!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Contemporary basins<\/b><\/p>\n<p>So the basic shape of a wash basin is bowl-shaped. But now there are more materials available to mould or carve into shapes, there are a greater variety of designs available to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are still many original bowl shaped creations made in all kinds of materials from glass to wood, metal or\u00a0stone. New modern <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/acatalog\/Composite-Basins-Sinks.html\">composite materials<\/a> mean that basins are available in many other shapes too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Flouting the norm<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Of course many of us striving to be different from everyone else and look for out-of-the-ordinary shapes or materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This has meant the development of wall-hung basins and pedestal basins which stray a long way from the traditional designs. People&#8217;s need to shock or be quirky with their contemporary bathroom design, means some will adore the idea of a self supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/acatalog\/Tulip-Freestanding-Sink.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">tulip-shaped basin<\/a> or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/acatalog\/Pure_Tea_Cup_Freestanding_Sink.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">tea-cup shaped<\/a> one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Upping the design ante?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A recent interesting basin design from Germany took the shape of <a href=\"http:\/\/dornob.com\/brilliant-spiral-sink-and-wash-basin-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">an ammonite<\/a> and aligned itself with many other forms in nature that take on the Fibonacci spiral. Is it practical we wonder?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/assets.dornob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/coriolis-spiral-shell-shaped-sink-design.jpg\" width=\"379\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Basin shapes inspired by swans and even a sliced egg are also available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2737\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2737\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2737 \" alt=\"swan-basin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/swan-basin-1.png\" width=\"710\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/swan-basin-1.png 1014w, https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/swan-basin-1-300x98.png 300w, https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/swan-basin-1-768x251.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amindesign.de\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amin Design<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last of all, what about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plastech.biz\/news\/A-sink-made-of-recycled-tire-rubber,n3776\" rel=\"nofollow\">a sink made from recycled rubber tyre<\/a>? Don\u2019t worry, it&#8217;s melted down and cleaned before being processed into a flat smooth sheet. This is stretched over a frame and held in place with a drain collar. The resulting shallow dipped effect is your sink.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2742 aligncenter\" alt=\"basin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/basin-1.jpg\" width=\"374\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/basin-1.jpg 468w, https:\/\/www.livinghouse.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/basin-1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So should the wheel, or in this case the basin, be reinvented?
