Some people will have builders and plumbers that have regularly carried out work for them, and therefore trust the quality of their work. If you don’t have this, a personal recommendation is the next best thing. It also helps if it’s a friend doing the recommending because you can check out their work, see the finish, and ask lots of questions.
If no one you know or trust can recommend a tradesman, another option is to look at online recommendations. There are two sites in particular where you can find rated trades people.
Mybuilder.com rates tradespeople on the feedback they receive. So anyone who hires a builder/plumber/electrician or other tradesperson and is really pleased with the job can comment here. The more recommendations a tradesperson gets, the higher their ratings and the more likely they are to be rehired.
At Ratedpeople.com the system works in a similar way. You can post a job for free and you will get up to three quotes or responses. As with Mybuilder, previous customers rate their plumber/bathroom fitter.
If you engage a trades person from either of these sites, you will be asked to rate them after the job.
Remember if you are engaging a plumber, make sure they are Gas Safe registered and preferably belong to the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering Association. This ensures you are getting the best qualified person for the job.
